DAME DOTTIES DIARYS EDITION 3
Hello again,
Just keeping up to date with what’s happening in the Panto Department – Willy, Head Technician-type chappie at the Civic Hall in Bedworth decided that it was long past time for me to see what preparations are going on for my appearances in JACK AND THE BEANSTALK. Well, this week it was a visit for the whole team to Clifford and Brown’s workshops in Nuneaton to see what they are doing with the sets. There was wet paint everywhere so I had to be really careful not to put my hand anywhere I shouldn’t. Sean was most insistent that I didn’t smudge anything. These artistic types are so fussy!
But I have to say that it was fun. First of all Sean read the script – well at least the text which the Director thinks that we will be following – and wrote down lots of notes on the back of his parking ticket – don’t ask! – which showed things like the need for a door leading to the garden and a table big enough for four to sit round which he then incorporated into these amazing huge paintings on equally huge bits of plywood. I am not sure how you do that when all you can see is the four feet immediately in front. Probably a bit like me trying to paint my toe nails. I swear my feet get further from my arms each month. Also never understood how Michael Angello managed the cistern chapel either or why he bothered painting in the smallest room. So Sean has created these amazing sets complete with curtains and pot plants and everything. Dead clever, really. Especially as these pot plants don’t need watering, which means that we’ve managed to cross Alan Titchmarsh off the cast list.
So a day trip to Nuneaton proved to be a real highlight of the week. Lovely weather, too, and the old banger managed the hills between the Civic and Sean’s without too much trouble. Felt a bit like a day out without the seaside but there was enough sand at the Griff Island to suggest a beach as we waited, and waited and waited for the traffic to move. Very nearly taught the stationary cars the words to the panto song. It would have passed the time away.
And I must admit that it gave me quite a buzz - can nearly smell the crowd and hear the roar of the greasepaint.
Must fly,
Dotty xxx
